For a long time, social media was designed for personal use. We went online to reconnect with old friends, share life updates and talk about whatever was happening in the world.

However, as our online dependencies grew – social media became far more than a pastime. In 2021, social media is an essential tool applied by numerous businesses in order to grow both their consumer best and annual revenue. In fact, companies without a social media presence tend to be considered outdated or even

With that in mind, as a business owner, it is essential that you find a way to get to grips with the world of social media and online business. Here are some top tips you can use to get started!

  • There are multiple different social media platforms out there – so you need to ensure that you select the right social media platform for your business. For example, if you’re a B2B company looking to connect with other companies, then you’re more likely to find success on LinkedIn than Instagram. On the other hand, clothing companies perform far better on Instagram than anywhere else.
  • Focus on curating quality content. While you may be tempted to post multiple times a day in the hopes that the posts will get great engagement, it is better to reduce the number of times you are posting in order to ensure that every post will hit the mark.
  • Whenever you are writing a social media post or choosing images/graphics, ensure that your intentions are clear. Every post should have a specific intention behind it – be that encouraging customers to make a purchase, or giving them more insight into your brand. Don’t post for the sake of it.
  • Remember that on image-based platforms, the written content can be just as, if not more important than the images. For example, you can increase the visibility of your posts by ensuring you use certain keywords or phrases. This can be achieved by utilising SEO best practices. If you can’t get to grips with this yourself, then it is definitely worthwhile to work alongside a company that offers SEO Services – meaning they’ll do the hard work for you.
  • Prepare your social media content ahead of time. This means that you don’t have to grab your phone and come up with new content each day – as you’ll already have it laid out ahead of you. Not only does this ensure that you can create quality content, but it also means you can set posts to go out at a certain time of day, such as the time when your customers are most likely to be on their phone.
  • Pay close attention to your social media analytics – such as how well each post performs (views, engagement, shares) or how often customers click on the links that you share. This will help you gain an understanding as to whether or not your efforts are paying off in the long run.
  • Use your social media as a tool to truly connect with others and build a relationship with your customers. You can do this by engaging with them whenever they leave comments or share your content.
  • Connect with local ‘influencers’ who have a strong online presence to discuss the chance of collaborating on a project. For example, smaller influencers will often advertise your products in exchange for a small fee or some freebies – helping raise the awareness of your brand during your infancy.
  • Focus on using social media to create an authentic voice. This helps customers feel as though they are communicating with an actual person as opposed to a faceless brand. As a result, you will be able to showcase professionalism and forge a relationship that is based upon trust.
  • Pay attention to current social media trends and capitalise upon them as soon as possible. For example, if a particular song is being played frequently everywhere you go – feature it in the background of your next video post (ensuring you don’t infringe upon copyright). This can increase the visibility of your posts.
  • If you are going to be posting video content, ensure that you also use captions. Not only is this a necessary step towards ensuring that your content is accessible, many people tend to scroll through social media with the sound off – meaning they rely on captions in order to watch videos.
  • Follow other creators who work within your industry. This could even open the door for future collaborations.
  • Ensure that each account is registered as a business account as opposed to a personal one. This means that you can easily view your engagement and produce sponsored content.
  • If your posts are underperforming, consider paying a small amount to boost them. You can typically do this through the social media platform itself or by working with an advertising company. This means that your posts will be more likely to appear on people’s timelines or social media feeds.
  • Make sure that you are creating the kind of content your customers would actually like or find interesting. To do this, you need to ensure that you have a deep understanding of your target audience and your brand.
  • Ensure that the content you produce is relevant to your brand and the kind of image you want to create. For example, if you run a clothing company. You should produce the following tailored content: fashion hacks, beauty and skincare advice, lifestyle content, tips on how to style certain items – as this is the kind of content that your target audience will enjoy.
  • Vary the content you produce slightly depending on what platform you are posting on. For example, on Instagram, the image is the first thing the customer sees, meaning that they will quickly scroll past it if the content isn’t interesting. Other platforms, such as Twitter, rely far more on the written content in order to gain traction. You should also pay attention to the fact that different platforms have different word counts for how much content you can post at once – so you will need to tailor the content specifically to the platform you are posting on.
